To bet on eSports: Specialized operator

Betting on Battlefield eSports games

Present on the eSports scene since 2005 via Battlefield 2, the Battlefield license participated in the early days of the discipline. Facing great organizational and technical constraints - LAN events were only between two teams of 8 players - Battlefield 2 as a competitive video game was therefore evolving far from the structured tournaments, packed stadiums and big marketing operations that we know today. Still, Battlefield gamers were already competing with passion and dedication.

Battlefield and eSports: an uneven relationship

An assault rifle

In 2020, publisher Electronic Arts and its iconic development studio DICE seem to have put the eSports scene on hold for good, especially when it comes to Battlefield. Despite a very large player pool and a lot of development potential, EA is not willing to put its latest military FPS, Battlefield V, on the competitive scene. It must be said that Battlefield V did not sell well, which puts the future of the franchise into question.

However, Battlefield 2 witnessed the birth of eSports. A few years later, in 2011, Battlefield 3, the biggest global success of the license, directly benefited from the expansion of the eSport branch at Electronic Arts, which resulted in competitions organized around the world.
But in 2013, when Battlefield 4 was released, the marketing war against Activision and its Call of Duty was particularly fierce. The CoD phenomenon put EA and the Battlefield license in a bad light, so that the realistic war game in subjective view slowly started to be eclipsed... Also, since the release of Battlefield 4, all the games belonging to the Battlefield license remained very "confidential" on the global eSport scene. Indeed, whether it's Battlefield 1 or Battlefield V, they all seem to be confined to the ESL One studios in Cologne, Germany.

Competitive Game Information:

Was Electronic Arts right to abandon competitive games?

With Battlefield 1, released in 2016 and Battlefield V, released in 2018, EA made the decision to abandon its investments in eSports. The last Battlefield competitions internationally have been too timid for the publisher. This choice is therefore most likely deliberate. The fact remains that quite often, the launch of a video game on the eSport scene is somewhat representative of its state of health. Moreover, the deployment of a game on the competitive scene also allows to multiply the sales, like Call of Duty: Black Ops III, which has largely benefited from its media exposure during eSport events to make a place for itself.

While Battlefield V is in agony in terms of sales and more and more players are starting to sulk about the latest DICE-developed title, EA can still hope to capitalize on its Battle Royale mode released in March 2019, Firestorm, to revive Battlefield V on the eSports scene. Recall that this Battle Royale mode is completely free - although you have to buy the base game to benefit from it.
Will this be enough to revive the Battlefield license and bring a little more light on the competitive prospects of such a game, yet rich in qualities? The future will tell us, no doubt!
