When eSports mixes passion and intelligent investment

Announced on December 18, 2015, the eSport team Echo Fox followed the buyout of Gravity Gaming by former American basketball legend Rick Fox. This announcement made in the most total vagueness (no roster revealed, the sum of the buyout not disclosed) gave way to resounding news. Echo Fox, a regular team in the NA LCS, made a Dantean recruitment once its rebranding was completed: South Korean "Soloqueue", European veterans "Froggen" and "Selfie" as well as young North American thumbs "Keith", "BIG" and "Hard" joined the ranks of Echo Fox's first-team League of Legends title contender.

While the first two seasons were complicated for Echo Fox due to roster issues (players left, others arrived), sometimes forcing the ex-Gravity to forfeit crucial duels, the eSport team owned by the former Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers player has been much better since then. However, despite some impressive performances against the best teams (Team SoloMid and Team Liquid in particular), EchoFox has always struggled to reach the LCS NA finals. This choice, although surprising, was in fact always the right one: after all, Rick Fox has never been a stranger to the gaming world, having already established a commercial partnership with Twin Galaxies - a social media that facilitates interaction, success, recognition and competition between people involved in the culture and activity of video games. Fox also donated his three NBA Championship Rings to the #Right2Game campaign, which supports the professionalization of gamers around the world.

It should be noted that the takeover of Gravity Gaming represents one of the most resounding in the United States on the eSport scene, especially in the LCS, and more globally League of Legends. Where the news was striking is that Rick Fox is not, basically, an investor.
For example, the purchase of Gravity Gaming was at odds with that of Team Dignitas, now known as Splyce, a franchise owned by a group of shareholders including Peter Levin, CEO of Lionsgate Interactive Venture and Games, and Steve Kaplan, co-manager of the Memphis Grizzlies and publicist for Linkin Park.
