The regional qualifying phases

The Challenge Cup

The Challenge Cup is a mini-tournament organized by FACEIT at the beginning of the regular season tournaments in order to build a pool of challengers in case the regular season qualifying spots prove difficult to fill.

This tournament brings together sixteen teams, eight of which qualified via specific qualifications and eight invited. The invited teams are often prestigious and professional teams. These teams compete in the Swiss round to determine a final ranking which will constitute a list of reserve teams for the ECS tournament.
When qualifying spots from the regular season are not available, the organization selects teams from the top of the Challenge Cup standings in order of arrival.

Course of the competition

So, at the end of the interminable and enduring qualification phases, it is now time for the competition itself which will bring together four European teams and four teams from the North American qualifications.

A first group phase

After nearly ten weeks of qualifying on both continents, the eight teams now know their groups and their opponents for the competition. The groups were chosen by the teams with the best performances during the qualification phases.

The group stages are played over two days. The opening matches are played in a Best of One format with double elimination. All other matches are Best of Three.
