EGAMES: making eSport an Olympic discipline

Established at the initiative of the British government and the International eGames Committee (IEGC), the 2016 Olympic Games held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, hosted EGAMES for two days, the eSports equivalent of the Olympics. During the first day of the event, some of Brazil's best e-athletes battled it out in exhibition matches around the game Smite, arguably the most popular MOBA in Latin America. On the second day of competition, top professional gamers from around the world competed in double elimination matches on Nintendo's fighting game, Super Smash Bros.

It is certainly commendable that the eGames International Committee and the British government have joined forces to create EGAMES, an "international video game tournament where national pride is the ultimate prize". But if the first edition of EGAMES took place in Rio and was quite successful, for the moment, there hasn't been a second one... Indeed, while Ed Vaizey - MP Minister for Culture -, said he was proud of the British ambitions to promote the UK as a leader in the eSport sector, the exciting adventure promised by EGAMES doesn't seem to have found a new chapter. But why is that?

Bringing credibility, dignity and inspiration

Yet the ambition of EGAMES was clear on paper: to bring credibility to the industry, dignity to the players and inspiration to the spectators. Almost three years after the only edition to date, the EGAMES seem to have vanished. Yet, all the ingredients were there to create a recipe for success. As a reminder, the EGAMES were supposed to pit teams composed of male and female players over the age of 18 against each other.
And even though only the teams from Great Britain, Canada, Brazil and the United States were participating at the time, it was not enough to convince the other federations. This is especially true since the eGames International Committee had openly invited other countries to submit their own eTeams to the competition. But perhaps the biggest problem with EGAMES is that the e-athletes do not receive any remuneration in return for participating in the Video Game Olympics. As if, when it comes to eSports, it's all about money!

In any case, it would be a pity if the EGAMES were a definitively aborted project. Other similar initiatives are intended to legitimize eSports on an international scale.
This is the case, for example, with the World Cyber Games (WCG), an international eSports competition around multiplayer games in which hundreds of e-athletes from around the world compete in a variety of events known as the "eSports Olympics."
