The International Dota 2 Championships: the steps to a global success

The International'logo

Revealed at Gamescom to introduce the game Dota 2 to a global audience, the IT tournament immediately drew crowds because of its incredible guaranteed prize of $1.6 million - $1 million of which was awarded to the winning team. At the time, the first edition of the International Dota 2 Championships allowed sixteen teams to compete by invitation. Through 2018, the tournament saw its guaranteed prize pool grow exponentially: while in 2012, when it moved to Seattle, the Dota 2-branded tournament kept the same prize pool, the following year, community contributions resulted in a guaranteed overall prize pool of $2.8 million.

In 2014, the guaranteed prize money passed the $10 million mark, and two years later, in 2016, it doubled to $20 million. In 2018, after six years in Seattle, The International Dota 2 Championships was exported to Vancouver, Canada, before being relocated to Shanghai, China, where it became the biggest eSports event on the planet with a prize pool totaling $34 million. Never before seen! After a 2019 edition of the tournament that was held in the Mercedes-Benz Arena in front of a raucous crowd of spectators, the organizer hinted that future editions of TI would continue to make stops abroad. The destination chosen in 2020 is none other than Stockholm, capital of Sweden.

The Dota 2 eSport tournament is getting progressively more complex

Since its inception, TI has become increasingly complex due to its constant restructuring. For example, while in 2011 only sixteen teams competed in the final stages, in 2018 no less than sixty-three different teams fought in the group stages alone. However, the terms of participation remain the same: it is the publisher Valve itself that invites the teams of its choice to its global competition on Dota 2. Usually, the defending champion and the top teams in the monthly tournament rankings get an invitation ticket, but the more circumspect can't help but think that this system allows Valve to have total control over the event.

However, since 2012, qualifying rounds have been integrated into the competitive structure of Dota 2. While Invictus Gaming has been invited six times since the inception of the International Dota 2 Championships, lesser-known teams have to prove themselves in satellite tournaments, knowing that they can be promoted or relegated to higher/lower divisions depending on their track record. In any case, these secondary events have helped boost sales of eSport matches on Dota 2. For example, the ticket price to attend a high-level match on Dota 2 is $70 per person.
And when we know that some fans are ready to pay $300 for a "weekend package", we think that Valve has found a good way to quickly replenish its coffers!
